About

Aeneas was a Dardanian hero, the son of the mortal Anchises and of the goddess Aphrodite. He was of a royal Trojan line, cousin of King Priam, and was raised by the nymphs on Mount Ida. He married the lady Creusa, daughter of Priam and Hecuba, and had a child named Ascanius by her. Since his father was crippled he ruled their home of Dardania. Aeneas did not join the Trojan War until he was driven from Mount Ida by Achilles. When he did join he was one of the best Trojan warriors, second only to Prince Hector.

When the city of Troy fell Aeneas escaped with his father on his back, and his son by his side, though his wife got seperated from them and died. He also escaped with the Paladium, a sacred statue of the goddess, Athene. Other tales say he was taken as prisoner, and still others say he ruled the fallen Troy after the Achaeans left.

It is said that he traveled to Italy and married Lavinia, daughter of Latinus the king of Latium. It is also said that en route to his quest to found a "new Troy", he stopped in Carthage where he was given refuge by its queen, Dido - of whom he had a famous but tragic love affair with.

His decendant Romulus founded the Roman empire. He is also ancestor to the Julian family (rulers of Rome), the Palemonids (rulers of Lithuania and Romania) and the legendary Kings of Britain through his grandson, Brutus.

Towards the end of Aeneas' life Ovid said that Venus (Aphrodite) convinced Zeus to make her son immortal, and she took him to live with her on Olympus. Aeneas was recognized as the god, Jupiter Indiges, in his immortal form.
